Catch Our Smile
I'm too young to remember the late Pacific Southwest Airlines (PSA), though from what I have read, I would have loved to fly on it. PSA caught my eye when reading a post on John C. Dvorak's blog who mentioned its callipygian flight attendants. The airline was a regional discount carrier based in San Diego. It served as an inspiration for Herb Kelleher when he created Southwest Airlines, including borrowing part of the name.
PSA called itself "The World's Friendliest Airline". All of its airplanes featured a smile on the nose and some models were called Grinningbirds or Smiliners. The stewardesses of PSA were also famous for their colorful uniforms with very high hemlines. The preflight announcements were humorous including lines like, "If you are sitting next to a child, or someone acting like a child". PSA emphasized making flying an enjoyable experience, instead of riding an airborne bus. However, a tragic incident involving a disgruntled employee shooting an entire aircrew dead and crashing the plane as well as purchase by US Air doomed it.
The following are great sites to read about PSA.
BTW, a great podcast to listen to is Fly My Way by Joe d'Eon. He is a commercial pilot who relates stories on everything related to flying. The original title for the podcast was "This Airplane Life" and it clearly shows that the program was inspired by public radio's This American Life. Every episode is full of great anectodes.
